Art was born Sept. 26, 1926, in Biwabik, the son of George and Louise (Forte) Campbell. He grew up in Eveleth, Minnesota. Art married Joyce May 24, 1952, in Clarinda, Iowa. He served in the Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946 during World War II.
He received his bachelor's degree from St. Cloud Teachers College; a master's degree from Colorado State College; and continued graduate studies at Northwestern University and the University of Iowa. Art was a science teacher for 36 years, teaching at schools in Downers Grove, Ill., Worthington, Minn., Iowa City High School and the last 20 years at English Valley High School, retiring in 1991.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside and the Iowa City American Legion. He served a term on the Iowa City Board of Education from 1967 to 1969. During this time he was a research associate in toxicology at the University of Iowa. From 1969 to 1971, he was vice president of Red Ball Engineering.
Art loved music and played piano in many bands during high school, college and while in the service. He derived great pleasure in the achievements of his students, regardless of what path in life they chose.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, George; and a son, Kevin.
Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
