Tim was born on July 7, 1961, in Monmouth. He was reared and educated in Monmouth, graduating from Monmouth High School in 1979. While in high school he lettered in both swimming and golf. Tim graduated in 1983 from the College of Agriculture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, majoring in restaurant management. While at the University of Illinois he was a member of Acacia fraternity. As a member of the fraternity he served as commisar and secretary and played on the fraternity's basketball, rugby, water polo and hockey teams. He was a big Illini fan.
On July 3, 1993, Tim married Donna Dunlap Merritt in Monmouth. She survives, along with Tim's parents, Ralph and Marjorie (Headley) Butler of Monmouth, his sister Ann Finnegan (Tom) of Champaign, his brother-in-law Jim Dunlap (Marilyn) of Jupiter, Fla., and his stepdaughter Michelle Merritt-Gilbert (Larry) and their children Liam Richard, Stephen Cross and Isabella Grace of Monmouth. Tim began his career managing and working in several restaurants in Florida, Georgia and Illinois. He also worked as a sales representative for Judge & Dolph, a wholesale liquor distributor. Most recently he was teaching in both Illinois and Florida.
Tim was a loving husband, son, brother and devoted grandpa. He was always proud of all of his grandchildren's accomplishments. Tim loved music, was a good singer and spontaneous lyricist, and played percussion for Fat Sammy Band. He was an excellent cook and host, with a dry sense of humor. A fantastic golfing buddy, Tim was an avid golfer and loved skiing in Colorado. He was a big teddy bear of a man, always generous to friends and family. He will be greatly missed.
