Samp, as he was known around Monterey, (possibly short for Sample) worked the family farm west of Monterey for many years before retiring to the house in town. After retiring from farming, he worked at Culver Military Academy until a stroke forced him to quit. This stroke was not severe and left him with no paralysis and he remained in fairly good health until his death. He often could be found working on his sons' farms usually mending fence or building hog houses. After his stroke, he converted to Catholicism (with much coercing from his wife).
