It's the wee, dark hours of the morning, about to dawn Thanksgiving Day. I held her in my arms all night, knowing I had to be with her...she had to know I was with her. She was swaddled in a baby blanket, which ferrets absolutely adore, and I wrapped both sides of my shirt around her so that she could see my face and feel the warmth of Mommy.
She slept mostly, and twice I gave her pain meds just to be sure she was comfy. About five thirty a.m. she slipped softly away...the Bridge and so many friends and family in view.
For seven years we loved this baby, and forever will. Zoe Jane, on this Thanksgiving Day I am so thankful for those seven years, for your wonderful life and for all the ferrets, ratties, mousies, doggies and kitties who have been part of our family and that we miss so very much. Please tell them for me?

As with our other babies, we adopted Zoe Jane into our family through our local ferret rescue. We just happened to be the ones who went to pick her up from a residence on behalf of the rescue - and knew we would not be able to part with her. A sweet young woman named Annie was Zoe's first mommy and she loved her dearly but could not keep her. God bless you, Annie.
Zoe Jane died of cancer.

"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle , easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully
understanding the necessary plan..."

from the book, Separate Lifetimes
"The Once and Again Prince"
by Irving Townsend.
