Mary Doane Maynard, of 99 Pond Meadow Road, Westbrook, Connecticut, died at age 89 at the Old Saybrook Convalescent Hospital. Mary was the daughter of John and Clara Pendleton Doane of Westbrook and a lifelong resident of the town. On November 28, 1936 Mary became the wife of Russell Irving Maynard, the son of Arthur E. and Bertha A. Maynard of Middletown, Connecticut. Mary and Russ had two sons, Bruce and Joel Maynard, and later became the grandparents of six grandchildren and then eight great-grandchildren. Mary was also survived by a sister, Mabel Doane Pellerin of Westbrook, and two brothers, John Doane, Jr. and Donald Doane, both of Westbrook.
As a young woman, Mary and her sister, Mabel, worked at Ponds in Clinton, Connecticut; later, Mary worked with her husband, Russ, at the Westbrook Post Office. Mary was a very active member of the First Congregational Church of Westbrook, teaching Sunday School; she served as the Superintendent of Sunday School, Camp Counselor, Delegate to the State, and Deacon of the Church. She was a familiar figure at the annual Church Fair on the Green, as one of the "Fudge Ladies". She was also a member of Eastern Star. She and her husband, Russ, were a wonderful and positive example in Westbrook for countless young people, year after year.
