Suzanne Lee Kays was a United States Army Veteran. She was a Deputy Sheriff for the Dallas County Sheriff's Department, and it was her second night as a sworn deputy. Deputy Kays was working security in the lobby of the Lew Sterrett Jail when a man with a history of mental problems attacked her. She died a short time later at the Parkland Hospital in Dallas. In 1995, the Suzanne L. Kays Detention Facility was named in her honor.

The perpetrator was convicted and sentenced to two life terms plus 20 years. He died in prison on October 2, 1992.
