According to his widow's pension record and the 1890 widow's census, William served in the 54th Regiment, PA Volunteers, Company K. However, he is not listed in Bates' history of PA Volunteers as serving in that or any other regiment.
William's tombstone states a death date of 11/17/1862, which matches his age except for the fact that the birth year is one year earlier than his baptism record indicates. There are two widow's pension cards for William's widow Eliza. On one card the date of application is hard to read (could be June 1862 or 1863). The other card clearly shows June 1862. However, the Civil War pension act was not effective until July 14, 1862 so a widow's pension could not have been filed for in June 1862. It seems likely that the widow's pension application was filed in June 1863, following William's death in November 1862. Company K was captured by the Confederates in October 1862 and taken to Libby Prison in Richmond, VA. William might have died while a prisoner there. Family legend states that William died in Alexandria, VA but there is no evidence of a connection between Company K and Alexandria, VA.
