Elisha J. Ashley was the son of Rev. Desmond Gibbs and Elizabeth Johnson Ashley. On December 24, 1882, Elisha was married to Mary E. DeWolfe in Old Lyme, by his father, Rev. Ashley. Elisha and Mary had two children, a son, Leslie, and a daughter, Myrtle M. Ashley. Leslie died as an infant, born August 11, 1884 and died October 6, 1884. Elisha's primary occupation was that of carriage painter, and he later farmed in Black Hall, (Old Lyme area), New London County, Connecticut. Elisha's monument in Duck River Cemetery includes his inscription, that of his wife and their infant son, Leslie.
