ARLINGTON - William T. Bryant Jr., 78, passed away Friday, Nov. 18, 2011.

Funeral: 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church Arlington. Interment: Moore Memorial Gardens. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Arlington Funeral Home.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Mission Arlington.

William T. "Bill" Bryant was born Aug. 27, 1933, in Graham. He was the only child of William Truman Bryant and Margaret Slay Bryant. Bill graduated from Graham High School in 1952. Some of his fondest memories of GHS included playing the trumpet in the band. Bill graduated from North Texas State University in 1956 with a degree in business education. After college, Bill served two years in the Army and another two years in the Army Reserve. Following the army years he worked at General Dynamics and began attending night school at Texas Wesleyan College. His goal was to earn a master's degree in education. At this point Bill decided that teaching might be the career he really wanted.

In the early 1960s Bill began a long and fulfilling career in education. His first job was teaching fifth graders at George C. Clark Elementary School in Fort Worth. He also returned to Texas Wesleyan to obtain a certificate in school administration. In the fall of 1966, Bill met his future wife, who was also a Fort Worth teacher. They met while moonlighting on second jobs teaching Adult Basic Education classes at Nash Elementary in Fort Worth. They married on June 30, 1968. In the fall of 1970, the Bryants moved to Arlington where Bill became a teacher/vice principal at Hill Elementary . In March of 1971 Bill became principal at Speer Elementary . After 11 years at Speer, Bill was transferred to Swift Elementary where he served as principal until his retirement in 1992.

Bill thoroughly enjoyed his career in education. Creating a caring elementary school atmosphere, collaborating with dedicated teachers to meet the needs of children, and working with parents were challenges Bill enjoyed. The rewards of those efforts were great - not monetarily but lasting in its effect on the lives of his students.

Bill and his wife did not have children of their own but were so honored when in 1993 Arlington Independent School District named a new Elementary School at them. Bill was a long-term member and deacon at First Baptist Church Arlington, a member of the Arlington Retired School Employees Association and a master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Texas, Young County, for more than 50 years.

Bill Bryant was a wonderful man. There was no pretense about him. He was honest, trustworthy and believable. Bill loved people and always tried to make others feel better. His sense of humor endeared him to an immense circle of friends. Bill defined the title gentleman. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors: Loving wife of 43 years; several cousins; and countless friends.
