Her Eightieth Birthday
There was a pleasant surprise party and a family reunion at the residence of Mrs. D. A. Johnson just south of the American Mills on Center Creek on the evening of July 1, 1899 to celebrate the eightieth birthday of Mrs. L. H. [sic?], who is not living on the old homestead with her daughter, Mrs. Johnson. This homestead she and her husband, Nathan Ralston settled upon and improved shortly after they came to this county, which dates back to July 12, 1837.
"Grandma," although just having passed the eightieth mile stone, is in fair health and enjoyed the entertainment very much.
Those present were J. L. Ralston, L. P. Ralston, R. N. Ralston, J. W. Batten, W. H. Parker, W. H. Rogers, Chas Ingle and their families.
Messrs. C. N. Johnson, W. Clubb and W. P. Ralston, making forty-two in all.
"Grandma's" blood relatives present consist of three children, thirteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
The early part of the evening was spent in greetings and social conversation, and then refreshments were served. The little folks were served first, with "grandma" presiding at the table.
Much good feeling prevailed throughout the entertainment. At a late hour the crowd began leaving for their homes, felling that the evening's enjoyment will not soon be forgotten.
