Carl Amato Sr., of Pueblo, passed away on Nov. 4, 2011. Carl was born on March 7, 1917, in Berwind, Colo., to Joe and Mary Amato, the oldest of six children born to this union. As a boy, Carl was raised in the coal camps northwest of Trinidad, later moving to Trinidad when his parents founded Amato Lumber Co. Carl was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army Air Corps flying on B-17 aircraft as a gunner and bombardier out of Foggia, Italy, with the 463rd bomber group. Returning to Trinidad from WWII, he began working for Domenic Leone Construction, then later with CF&I Allen Mine and finally the Colorado State Highway Department from which he retired in 1975. Then he joined his brothers in the family business until 2006. Carl was predeceased by wife, Louise (Ferri) Amato; parents, Joe and Mary Amato; brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Marie Amato; sister and brother-in-law, Frances (Julius) DiGregorio; brothers-in-law, Ed Castlenova, John B. (Putts), Pete (Nino) Ferri, Richard (Mun) Morgan, Crist Cunico; and sisters-in-law, Laura Amato, Dora Morgan, Mary Ella (Pena) Cunico and Lena Ferri. Surviving family members are son, Carl (Rosalie) Amato Jr. of Pueblo; granddaughter, Meri Dawn (Paul) Hyso of Albuquerque, N.M.; great-granddaughters, Carlee and Kadie Hyso, also of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandsons, Gianni (Melissa) Amato of Trinidad, and Mario Amato of Longmont, Colo. Also survived by sister, Nadine Castlenova of Pueblo, Colo.; and brothers, Sam (Kathy) Amato of Cuchara, Colo., and Lou (Georgina) Amato of Trinidad. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home. The family will receive guests during this time. The Holy Rosary will be recited at 9 a.m. on Nov. 10 at Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home, with the funeral Mass to follow at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Pallbearers are nephew, Joey Amato; great-nephews, Carl Dioniso, Mark Schultz Jr., Sam Amato, William Amato, Steve Morgan and Stanley Morgan. Honorary pallbearers are all of his nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Sangre de Cristo Hospice, 1207 Pueblo Boulevard Way, Pueblo, CO, 81005.
