SUN PRAIRIE — Reverend Hector D. Gunderson of Sun Prairie, passed away early Sunday morning, after a short illness. Reverend Hector was born to Reverend Sevrin and his wife Klara on June 8, 1903, in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. He was married to Ann Strandness of Larimore, North Dakota, on June 23, 1930, Ann died In 1964, at the age of 64. He served Lutheran congregations in the Mt. Horeb area from 1930 until 1954. He organized two Lutheran congregations, West Mlddleton Lutheran in 1930 and Lake Edge Lutheran, Madison in 1954. Graduating from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1925, he served two years as Dean of Men at Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa. He graduated from Luther Theological Seminary in 1930 and was ordained with his brother Gerhard. He was called by the parishes of Springdale, Vermont, Black Earth, and East Blue Mounds to serve first as assistant to his father than as the pastor. He continued in the Mt. Horeb area from 1930 until 1954. He was asked by the mother synod (ALC) to organize a new congregation on Madison's east side, Lake Edge Lutheran. He began preaching In a grade school gym in May 1954, and dedicated the first building in October. He resigned having served ten years. The church had grown to 1500 members, all debts were paid, and architectural plans for a new church home were developed. Reverend Hector continued his active ministry as pastor of Burke Lutheran Church, Portage Road, Madison, from 1,964 to 1973. At age 70 when he resigned from Burke Lutheran he continued as a member until 1982. He became a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Madison, where his father had served as pastor from 1882 to 1890. He was Secretary of the Eastern District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church (the entire United States east of Mississippi) from 1943 to 1949. He was on the Three Person Parish Education Committee of that district from 1941 until 1949. During World War II he was Secretary of the Dane County Red Cross from 1942 to 1946. On closing his ministry Reverend Hector retired to his home in Sun Prairie. He contentedly spent most of the summer months at the Gunderson summer cottage on Long Lake In Washburn County... Reverend Hector, who wrote his own obituary, would like to be remembered as being blessed by his many friends and family, enJoying good health through his long and successful ministry and retirement.
