Civil War records: The 11th Kansas Cavalry was organized at Kansas City April 1863, from the 11th Kansas Infantry. John Holding mustered in 11th Kansas Cavalry, company I , as private and mustered out as Sergeant.

His obituary, Tuesday, April 11, 1911, Fort Scott Tribune Monitor, page 6: From Monday, Daily Tribune, Death of Old Soldier. John W. Holding died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Otto Sterling, 612 S. Hill St, of tuberculous, which he had suffered some time past. He came here to visit his daughter and sons who reside in this city last winter, leaving later to go to Topeka to visit a brother for some time. He returned to Fort Scott 3 weeks ago. Mr. Holding was the father of John Holding of Brooks commission company; also Mrs. Sterling and E. V. Holding of this city. Another son, Will Holding lives at Sulpher Springs, Arkansas. The latter arrived this morning. Two daughters: Mrs. Frank Richards and Mrs. L. D. Arm who live at Great Bend, Kansas will be unable to come on account of serious illness of the latter. D. H. Holding & James Holding of Topeka, two brothers of the deceased came this morning for the funeral. Miss Mary Sterling, assistant at the public library, is a granddaughter. The funeral this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Holiness church was largely attended. The body was taken to the National cemetery and members of the G. A. R. had their services there.

J. W. Holding was found in Kansas state census in 1859 & 1865 in Jefferson county, Kansas John W. was in 1875 census in Bourbon county, Kansas with wife Frances J. (1842-?); and children: Nellie (1865-1944); Edward V. (1866-?); William E. (1869-?); & John Anderson Holding (1873-1933). This family was also in Bourbon county, in the 1885 Kansas state census.
