"The Coach," as he was famously known, whose sign-off slogan "keep your eye on the ball," was a landmark in Los Angeles radio for nearly three decades. He is best remembered as Rick Dees' sidekick and sports reporter on 102.7 KIIS-FM for during the entire 1980s. Over forty years ago, Charleye got his start in radio in Texas where he worked alongside Steve Edwards, current noted morning talk show host in Los Angeles. He went on to work for such stations as KLAC, KPOL, KPRO, and numerous others. After leaving KIIS-FM, Charleye worked for another popular station, KKBT, carrying the same "Coach" role, for John London's House Party. Thereafter, he joined KNX-1070 in 1995, doing the station's sports, and remained with them until his death in October 1998 from complications of kidney surgery.
