Samuel Earl "Jack" Alfrey, 91, of Sedalia, passed away Saturday, October 29, 2011, at his home. He was born September 19, 1920, in Nelson, MO, the son of Elmer Green and Ethel Renic Griffith Alfrey. On August 31, 1940, in Sedalia, he married Mary Jane Danley, who survives of the home. Mr. Alfrey was a row crop and livestock farmer most of his life. Before retiring, he also worked in the fertilizer business as Swift Farm Center. He attended Salt Pond School in Saline County. He was a member of Broadway Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon and elder. He was active in the Pettis County Balanced Farming organization, was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, was active in the Quisenberry and Manila Community Clubs, served several terms on the Green Ridge School Board and was a 4-H leader. He and Mary Jane went RV camping in Sun City, Arizona for over 30 years. He enjoyed golfing, walking each morning and going to the coffee shop at Best Western and North 65 Cafe. In addition to his wife, survivors include four children, Gaylon Alfrey, and his wife, Mary, of Sedalia, Sandra Butts, of Spokane, WA, Mick Alfrey, of Sedalia, and Dean Alfrey, and his wife, Cheri, of Smithville, MO; nine grandchildren, Galynne Riggenbach, Jason Alfrey, Tammy Jackson, Diana Eckhoff, Greg Houk, Lee Houk, Carmen Sheedy, Dana Hurley and Travis Alfrey; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Edna Sill and Daisy Alfrey. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at Heckart Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Alex Wales officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Heckart Funeral Home.
