A graveside service will be conducted Monday at 1:00 P.M. at Pisgah Cemetery with Rev. Rock Jaggers officiating. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home.
The Maury County native was the son of the late Willard N. Akin and Grace Lovell Akin. He was a 1959 graduate of Hampshire High School and attended Martin Methodist College on a basketball scholarship and then Middle Tennessee State University on a baseball scholarship. An avid sportsman, Mr. Akin played and coached Men's slow pitch softball for many years. He also umpired softball for the past several years in Columbia and Culleoka.
He was former owner of Sims Department Store in Mt. Pleasant and was more recently employed part-time at the Maury County Convenience Center on Pulaski Pike. He was a member of the Maury County School Board from 1983 and 1994, ending his term as Vice Chairman. Mr. Akin served in the Tennessee National Guard.
Survivors include one daughter, Melissa (Todd) Baxter of Santa Fe; two grandchildren, Tanner Baxter and Rachael Baxter, both of Santa Fe.
He was preceded in death by one daughter Carole Akin and one grandson Cody Baxter.
Active pallbearers will be Gary Riley, Phil Lovell, Ronald Edward Lovell, Billy Graham Lovell, Leonard Embler, and Brandon Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Embler, Billy Dan Morrow, W. M. Morrow and co-workers at Maury County Convenience Center on Pulaski Pike.
