Harry "Dempsey" Francis Adams, of Norfolk, VA, passed away early Wednesday morning on June 22, 2011, with his daughter at his side.

Harry was born October 11, 1923 in Oldtown, MD. His parents were Charles Price and Bertha Adams. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis Adams; by his son, Blane Charles Adams; and by his eight older brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Richard Griffin of Gloucester, VA; and by his grandson, Ryan Zachary Adams of Rowan County, KY.

As a young man, Harry enjoyed boxing, but he gave up the sport when he joined the Navy. Harry served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, and was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. During World War II, he served as part of the Armed Guard protecting merchant ships bringing supplies to Russia across the North Sea on the Murmansk Run. For this he was awarded a medal by Russia following the fall of the Soviet Bloc.

Harry was a resident of Norfolk, VA for the last 54 years of his life. He and his wife attended Wesley Memorial Methodist Church. He was a loyal member of the Ocean View Masonic Lodge #335.

Harry had a sunny disposition and will be missed greatly by those who loved him.

A funeral service was held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 8464 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, VA on Saturday, June 25, 2011, at 2pm. Viewing and visitation was held on Friday evening, June 24, 2011, prior to the funeral, from 6pm to 7:30pm at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home. Masonic Rites were held at gravesite.
