Jeff Carter, leader of business, civic and religious affairs, passed away at his home in Quitman early Sunday morning, February 8, 1948, on his 70th birthday. Born in the Mont Rose Community of Clarke County, MS, son of George W. and Theodocia Culpepper Carter. Mr. Carter began his career as a young man as a clerk in the J K Kirkland Store. Later, he and Ben Carter formed the Carter Merchantile Company. Later still, the firm of Jeff Carter "Dealer In Everything," and prospered. He then realized his ambition with the Jeff Carter Grocery Company "Wholesale Only." He was a member of the Quitman Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons for many years. He was survived by his wife, Ruth Carter, and a daughter, Mrs. Maude (Withers) Gavin. Funeral services were held Monday, February 9, 1948, at the Quitman Baptist Church with the Revs. V. G. Clifford and W. L. Meadows officiating. Interment folllowed at the Odd Fellows Cemetery with McClellan-Walters Funeral Home in charge.
