Martha attended the Young Ladies' Institute, founded in 1859 in Granville, Ohio, which later became Denison University.

Martha was the great granddaughter of Theophilus Rees who was the leader, founder and patriarch of the Welsh Hills, established in 1802 in Granville, Ohio.
Also the great granddaughter of James Black who built "Black's Tavern" in 1802 on what would be the Newark, Ohio courthouse square.
She was also the great granddaughter of two Revolutionary War soldiers, Major James Taylor, first associate judge in Newark, Ohio arriving in 1804. and John Roads a fifer in the Revolution.
