Martha Funkhouser was a first generation American, born in Clarkson, Nebraska to Emil Konicek and Mary (Trojan), who immigrated from Moravia and Bohemia as infants.

She taught school in a one room school house and later worked as a legal secretary in Madison, Nebraska, where she met Raymond Funkhouser whom she married in 1935. In 1937, they moved to Long Beach, California, where they lived and had their two sons, G. Raymond and Gene.

Her life in Long Beach was devoted to her family, where she shared her mastery of cooking, baking and candy making, the enjoyment of travel, and the meaning of unconditional love.

Her beloved husband of forty-one years wore many editorial hats with the Long Beach Independent, Long Beach Press-Telegram, and Los Angeles Mirror News at various times and passed away in 1976. Martha volunteered for many years at St. Mary's Hospital in Long Beach before moving to Santa Barbara in 1996.

She is survived by sister, Irene Lundy, Napa, CA; sons, G. Ray (Judy), Ambler, PA; and Gene (Dee), Carpinteria, CA; grandchildren, Rochelle ("Shelley") Balbaky, Boston, MA; Laura Funkhouser (Peter Cortelyou), Goleta, CA; Scott Burgess, Portland, OR; Brent Burgess, Berkeley, CA; and Cheryl Alexander, Dana Point, CA; and great-grandson, Andre Cortelyou, Goleta, CA.

Martha passed away after a brief illness, with her family near her in her final days. Her smile and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her.

She was buried next to her husband at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach.
