Roy Herrud, 83, of Langdon, ND passed away Wednesday April 8, 2009 at Cavalier County Memorial Hospital of Langdon.

Roy Edwin Herrud was born April 23, 1925 in Pine City, MN to James and Edith (Carlson) Herrud. He grew up and attended school in Pine City where he graduated in 1942. He enlisted in the Marines and served with the 3rd Marine Division in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Purple Heart in August 1943 and was Honorably Discharged on December 8, 1945. He arrived in Langdon January 3, 1946 and began work at Carlson Jewelry. In 1947 he moved to Peoria, IL where he attended Bradley University School of Watchmaking/Horology. In 1949 he returned to Carlson Jewelry as a watchmaker. Roy and Lyla Olson were united in marriage on April 2, 1948 and recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. They purchased the business in 1968 from his uncle George Carlson. He owned and operated Herrud Jewelry on main street in Langdon for 20 years until selling the business to his son in 1989. He continued to work in the business until November 2008. Roy was a fixture of the Langdon business community for over sixty years.

Roy was very active in his community. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Langdon where he served as Trustee for 12 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 98 in Langdon and the Lebanon Lodge since 1949 becoming a Master Mason at that time. He also served on the Masonic Holding Corporation for 24 years. Roy was President of the Commercial Club from 1958 to 1959 and served as a Langdon High School Athletics Ticket Taker for 45 years. He was on the Cavalier Country Memorial Hospital Board for many years. Roy was president of the Langdon Country Club for 40 years; he was passionate about golf and taught his grandchildren how to play.

Roy is survived by his wife Lyla of Langdon, ND, son Alan (Connie) Herrud of Langdon, daughter Nancy (Steve) Staloch of Bloomington, MN, grandchildren: Matthew (Amanda) Herrud of Ft. Benning, GA, Andrew (fiancé Jen) Herrud of Fargo, Mallory Staloch of Bloomington, MN and Kari Staloch of Bloomington, MN; great-grandchildren: Reese, Cali, and Parker; brother Lester of Green Valley, AZ and many nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Clarence, twin brother Ray, and George; and his sisters: Verna, and Phyllis.

VISITATION will begin at five o'clock Friday April 10, 2009 at the Presbyterian Church in Langdon, ND.

A PRAYER SERVICE will be held Friday April 10, 2009 at 7:30 pm at the Presbyterian Church of Langdon, ND

SERVICES will be held Saturday April 11, 2009 at 2:00 O ‘Clock
