Frank Birch Sr., UW Alumnus, Dies in Florida
ISLAMORADA, FL. - Frank V. Birch Sr., 78, retired Milwaukee advertising executive and prominent University of Wisconsin alumnus, died Wednesday (Aug. 8, 1973) in Florida after a brief illness. A 1918 UW graduate, Mr. Birch was a former president of the UW Foundation and the National "W" Club. He also served as president of Lions International. In 1965 he was given a Distinguished Service Award by the Wisconsin Alumni Assn. For many years he was president, and later chairman of the board, of Klau-Van Pietersom-Dunlap, Inc., a Milwaukee advertising and public relations firm.
Surviving are his wife, Roa; and three sons, Thomas E. and Frank V. Jr., both of Milwaukee; and John R., Menomonee Falls. The UW Foundation is accepting memorials in Mr.Birch's name.

Frank Birch Sr., 78. a Stevens Point native and a former Milwaukee civic leader, died Wednesday of leukemia at his Florida Keys home. He was the retired board chairman and president of Klau-Van Pietersom-Dunlap, a Milwaukee advertising and public relations firm. After retiring from the firm, he was vice president of Roa's Films, Inc., a Milwaukee company producing and distributing audio-visual aids. The firm, founded by his wife, Roa, in 1953, was acquired by the Journal Co. of Milwaukee in 1970, and Mr. and Mrs. Birch retired last year. They moved to Florida several months ago. Mr. Birch was president of the International Association of Lions Clubs in 1937 and of the University of Wisconsin Foundation from 1957-61. He was also a past director of the Wisconsin Alumni Association and a director of the Green Bay Packers Football Corp. Born in Stevens Point, Mr. Birch received his early schooling in Minneapolis and Fond du Lac. He graduated from the UW-Madison in 1918, and was editor of the Badger, the university year book, and a member of the team that won the Big Ten basketball title in 1917. He joined Klau-Van Pietersom-Dunlap after serving as a lieutenant in the Army Air Service in World War I, and became president in 1951 and chairman in 1955. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons. Thomas of Glendale, John of Menomonee Falls and Frank Jr. of Shorewood, and a sister, Mrs. J.R. (Olive) Potter, Neenah. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wisconsin Memorial Park Chapel, Brookfield, with entombment following there. The body is at the Philip J. Weiss Funeral Home, Milwaukee.
