Son of John Martin and Lula Belle Hays Simler. On August 28, 1955 he married Marjorie Ellen Bachmann. He was a 1948 graduate of Kirksville High School and received his masters degree in education administration from Northeast State Teachers College in Kirksville. His doctorate degree was received from the University of Iowa. As a teacher and principal he served a number of school districts including Keytesville. From 1973 unitl his retirement in 1982 he was a professor at Western Illinois University at Macomb, Illinois. In the early 50's he served in the U.S. Air Force as a staff seargent. He was a member of the Sturgeon Baptist Church and various educational and other organizations. Rev. Michael Peyton, of Sturgeon, officiated at the funeral with burial in Kirksville.
