U.S. Congressman. Born in Middletown, Pennsylvania, he was a physician, entered the United States Navy as a surgeon in 1799 and resigned his commission in 1801. Settling in Chester, Pennsylvania, he practiced medicine and during the War of 1812, he served as Captain in command of the Mifflin Guards. After the war, he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the 100th Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, Pennsylvania Militia. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, (1815-18, 23-25) and Sheriff of Delaware County, (1819-23). In 1827, he was elected as an Adams to the Twentieth Congress, serving until 1829. After his term, he served again as a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, (1829-35). Appointed inspector of customs in 1841, he was elected justice of the peace in Chester, Pennsylvania, 1846 and served until his death at age 76.
