SP4 Darrell L. Reid, 20, was Wadsworth's first casualty of the VietNam war.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Reid of Terraceview Ave., Wadsworth, Darrell entered the US Army on May 10, 1966, a year after he graduated from Wadsworth High School, and served with C Company, 3rd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, Vietnam. He died in Binh Phoc, Mekong Delta, Vietnam on August 20, 1967.
Darrell was awarded The Purple Heart, Bronze Star for Valor, Combat Infantryman's Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
He was survived by his parents; sisters, Mrs. Deloris Masters of Akron and Mrs. Gail Gammell of Wadsworth; brothers, Roger of Cuyahoga Falls, Lester of Rittman, Edwin of Barberton, Dennis of Akron, Keith serving with the U.S. Air Force and David at home.
Burial Woodlawn Cemetery; Wadsworth, Medina Co., Ohio. Funeral arrangements were handled by Hilliard Funeral Home, Wadsworth.Medina County Gazette - Aug 23, 1967, pg. 1: Vietnam War Claims 5th Countian. Wadsworth Man Killed.
The war in Vietnam has claimed a fifth Medina County life. Dead of injuries sustained in ground action is Army Cpl. Darrell Reid, 20, of Wadsworth. The wounds were inflicted by an exploding land mine.
The son of Mr. ad Mrs. Lloyd Reid of Wadsworth, the soldier was a graduate of Wadsworth High School. He worked briefly at Wadsworth Foundry before entering service last June. He had been in Southeast Asia since the first of the year.
Hillard Funeral Home of Wadsworth is in charge of services.
