John was born in Jay Co., In where his father settled from Ohio about 1836. He married Jemima Alice Stultz on September 27, 1839 in Jay Co., IN and Alice A. (Hulderman) Binegar on January 04, 1880 in Jay Co., IN. The first 4 children were Jemima's and the two younger daughters are Alices's. A veteran of the Civil War, John was drafted unto the Union Army with his brother Elias. They both mustered in October 22nd, 1864, John as a Private in Company K, 23rd Indiana Infantry. Three months later in January on a march from Dalton, Georgia to Nashville, Tennessee, he was hospitalized, sick and unable to go on. He was discharged on August 1, 1865 in Indiana. Elias, his brother, never returned to his family after the War. His whereabouts is unknown. Nor is it known where Jemima was buried. She died about 1875 in Jay Co. where the family resided the 1890's when they moved to Wells Co.
