Mary Louise Freeman Garrett was born on February 2, 1937 in Hempstead, Texas. She attended public school in the Hempstead Independent School District system and graduated with academic honors as a salutorian from Sam Schwartz High School in the Class of 1956. She later earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Prairie View A&M University; also studied at the University of Houston and North Texas State University in Denton, Texas. Growing up in Hempstead, she attended the Saint Peters Baptist Church as a young adult; in 1974, she became a member of the Waller Church of God in Christ (also known as the Thomas Bailey Memorial Church of God in Christ) under the leadership of the late Supt. Thomas Johnson. Later united with the Lilly of the Valley COGIC in Bryan; moved membership to Grant Memorial COGIC in Brookshire. She was employed at Prairie View A&M University Hospital as an administrative assistant for 25 years; 10 years as a counselor in Student Financial Aid and 5 years as a Business Manager in the corporate world. Later was employed by the Waller Independent School District (worked at Waller High School) in 1984 and worked for 21 years teaching business classes and Business Computer Information Systems until her retirement in 2005. Survivors include her son, Chris Garrett (MeMe); four grandchildren: Letisah Wilson, DePaul Garrett, Selina Garrett, and Ronald Turner; three great-grandchildren; a special daughter: Renee Crawford and god-daughter: Andrea Henderson (James). She was preceded in death by both parents; two sons: Holly V. Alexander and Ronald D. Turner; four siblings:Arthur Steward; John Henry Hayes; Johnnie Maw Freeman, and Dorothy Jackson. Viewing was held at the Thomas Bailey Memorial Chapel Church of God in Christ on Friday, September 30, 2011 located on 3004 Sledge Street in Waller, Texas 77484. Funeral services were held at Bailey Chapel COGIC on Saturday, October 1, 2011. Interment was held at the Oakwood Cemetery in Hempstead, Texas.
