To Arrive Here
The body of 1st Lt. Basil Antonelli, who was killed in action on February 6, 1944, near Mt. Cassino, Italy, within five miles of his birthplace and the spot where his maternal grandmother was residing, will arrive in Vineland at approximately 11 A.M. Monday.

A military funeral will be held Tuesday morning from the residence of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Angelo Antonelli, of Central ave., Minotola. A Solemn Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church, Landisville, and re-interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Lt. Antonelli was 23 years old when he was killed. A graduate of Vineland High School, he had been a member of the school mile relay team, which set a Vineland High School and South Jersey record when it won the Camden- Suburban mile relay race in 1938 in the time of 3:32 to give Vineland the Group 4 track championship that year. The record never has been broken in Vineland or in South Jersey.

After his graduation from high school, Antonelli enlisted as a private in the 157th Field Artillery, National Guard. He rose to the rank of First Lieutenant.

Antonelli was among the first American soldiers in the invasion of Casablanca in the 1942 North African campaign, serving with the Third (Armored) Division. A torpedo destroyed the landing craft on which he was commanding officer, but despite being wounded, he remained on the craft until all the men aboard had been safely rescued.

After Marshal Rommel's German forces had been routed in North Africa, Lt. Antonelli took part in the invasion of Sicily. A member of the 805th Tank Destroyer Battalion, he was part of the American force which tried to storm Mt. Cassino, and in a letter dated Feb. 5, 1944, he told his parents that he was stationed near the place of his birth and near his maternal grandmother's residence. The next day he was killed in action, and his parents did not receive his last letter until several weeks later.

Besides his parents, Lt. Antonelli is survived by a brother, Americo; three sisters, Marie, Jenny and Anna, and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna Santagata. His father, Angelo Antonelli, is employed at the Kimble Glass plant. Further details of the military funeral will be announced later.
