ALDWORTH, William Ross "Bill"
Bill died on April 26, 2007. He was born in New York City on June 19, 1922. He grew up on Long Island and spent summers swimming and boating on Pushaw Pond near Old Town, Maine. He had a lifelong love for boats, especially canoes. Bill graduated from the University of Minnesota in agronomy and pledged his dad's fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega. He played tackle for the Golden Gophers in the East-West game, and was chosen as a college all-star. Unable to be drafted in WW II because of blindness in one eye, he joined the Merchant Marines and served as a butcher on Atlantic troopships. He always kept his knives sharp and was cherished as an excellent cook. In 1946 Bill married Beverly Ann Erickson and worked as a county extension agent in Great Falls and Glasgow, Montana. For six years Bill ran the family cattle ranch located in the Missouri breaks east of Culbertson, Montana. While on the ranch he invented a haystack mover and the family grew to include four children. After leaving the ranch he again worked as a County Extension agent in Townsend, MT. He joined CENEX as a sales manager and worked first in Billings, MT for nine years and later in Yakima, WA for 18 years. After retiring from CENEX, Bill was offered a chance to work with Agricultural Cooperative Development International, (ACDI) in Uganda helping farmers develope cooperatives to market their crops. He did similar work in Tonga, Sierra Leone and Jordan. His combination of practical agricultural knowledge, cooperative business experience, and natural enthusiasm for any new challenge made his projects successful; even though his work included crops as diverse as wheat, bananas, vanilla beans and dates. After moving to Bellingham, WA, he again traveled oversees working with Volunteers in Cooperative Assistance (VOCA). This work took him to Tunisia, Slovakia and Russia. Between assignments he could be found sailing his boat in the San Juan Islands. Wherever he lived Bill volunteered in the community. He and his wife came to Spokane in 2001 where he actively participated in the Comstock neighborhood council, heading up the safety committee. He also volunteered at the Southeast Cop Shop, tutored children in reading at Sunset School and was on the building and grounds committee at his church. Bill was a regular donor at the Inland Northwest Blood Bank. He could fix anything and kept his family active restoring a cabin at Newman Lake. Bill and Ann had just moved into Rockwood South, when he died unexpectedly in Barcelona, Spain while attending his grandson Zane's wedding. Bill is survived by his wife, Ann and their four children: Susan Aldworth Frasco and Craig Aldworth of Spokane, Cathy Aldworth Weaver of Santa Barbara, CA, Jeffrey Aldworth of Bozeman, MT, seven grandchildren: Carmen Leep Young, Zane Aldworth, Spencer Brown, Bob Leep, Nicole Weaver, Susana Weaver, Tyler Aldworth and one great grandchild; William Young. A memorial service will be held on May 14 at 10:00 A.M. at the Unitarian-Universalist church at 4340 West Fort George Wright Drive, Spokane, 99224. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent in Bill's name to the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Spokane.
