He married first wife, Jane Elizabeth Tye 11-18-1841 in Stewart, GA. She died abt. 1858.

William served as a Private in the 18th GA Infantry, Co. E (out of Gordon County).
This Regiment joined Lee''s Army of Northern Virginia(which included regiments from all over the Confederacy, Virginia, Georgia, Texas and Arkansas).
He was captured with others outside Richmond the evening of at 6/1/1864 during the Battle at Cold Harbor VA, and held as a POW at Point Lookout MD until his release/exchange, unknown date.

He fought at Gaines Mill, Seven Pines Manassas, Fredericksburg, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Snickers Gap, Wauhatchie GA, Little River TN, Knoxville TN(Ft. Sanders), Rogersville TN, Bean Station TN, Dandridge TN, Vicksburg, Gettysburg, Battle of the Wilderness VA, Spotsylvania Courthouse and Cold Harbor/Richmond.
