The 24th of September, Franz Joseph Spaeth. He was born on June 5th 1856 in Sasbachwalden,in the duchy of Baden.

He also grew up here. He received a Christian education. After he finished school, he worked on the farm. In the year of 1874 as a young man of 18 years he immigrated to the USA. He first settled near LaRose in our state, where a brother of his lived. Later he found work in a brewery in the adjacent Lacon. Here he learned the craft of brewery, which he practiced until his death. In the year 1885 the deceased came to Peoria. For 30 years he worked here for the same company and it loses with him one of its most faithful and reliable workers.

On Oct. 1888 he entered with Miss Marie Faucer the holy state of matrimony. The marriage was blessed with 6 children. 5 girls and a boy. The only little boy, little Franz, that was born to the parents, preceded his father to eternity when he was only seven years old. The death of this child was probably the biggest suffering (anguish) that the deceased experienced in his entire life. He never could forget his little Franzie (Franky) and his last longer walk which he took before his death, was to the grave of his child. He wanted to keep the grave in order and adorn it with flowers.

In the year 1892 the deceased and his wife became members of our church. Since he belonged to a different denomination from childhood on, he pubicly converted to the Lutheran faith after receiving instruction. He remained faithful to his church and his beliefs to the end. 11 years ago the deceased had to undergo an operation. He had injured himself while lifting. Ever since that time until April of this year he was able to perform his work with few interuptions. However for some years one could notice that work was hard on him. The illness (cancer of the stomach) which finally led to his death, seems to have been in his system for some time. In the month of May he was brought to St. Francis Hospital. However soon he longed to be home and so after 8 days they brought him home again. Only God alone knows what the poor man and his loved one esp. his wife had suffered in these weeks and months. At first he was still able to be up and around. At that time he still hoped that he would get better again. However after his fraility increased more and more and he finally could not leave his bed anymore, he started seriously to prepare himself for his last hour. I often visited him and spoke with him about salvation and I prayed with and for him.

Last Saturday, he received together wih his wife in all seriousness Holy Communion. It was touching to listen to hs faith with which he repeated the prayers after me. On Thursday already it was believed near his end had come. He said to me, "Oh, if I just could pass away." He still lived to the next day. At 10 minutes past 12 noon on Friday, Sept. 22, he made his last sigh (moan). He reached the age of 60 years, 3 months and 19 days.

He is survived by his griefing wife and 5 children, 5 daughters, Mrs. Anna Pitsch; Miss Emma, Mrs Clara Swartz, Miss Henrietta and Miss Helen and 3 grandchildren an 2 brothers. Mr. Xaver Spaeth of Nebr, who the joy of the deceased, had visited his sick brother 9 weeks ago. The brothers had not seen each other for 20 years he also came to the funeral. He is survived by another brother in Germany, Mr. Bernhard Spaeth, by a nephew Mr Henry Schneider from here . Morticin Fred M. Gess
