Gloria was a talented young lady who was a Girl Scout, a member of the beginner band and who sang in her church choir. Two days before she finished sixth grade, she was killed in a freak accident when a fallout shelter she and her friends were playing in exploded. Four of her friends aged 10 to 14 also died.

Gloria was survived by her parents, grandparents, and a sister, Frankie Ann.

A city park in Valdese, North Carolina, was named to honor the children.
