Beak Manuel was born in Clay County, Indiana in 1858 to James Madison Manuel and Sarah Eliza Draughon. The family moved to Camden County, Missouri before 1880, and he married Maria L. Grass there in 1881 and had ten children. His wife died in 1928 at their home in Richland, Pulaski, Missouri. Beak lived to be an old man and was in the state hospital in Vernon County, Missouri in his late 80s; there he had a bad fall which resulted in traumatic shock and he died two days later on December 31, 1946. His body was returned to Richland, Missouri to be buried in Oaklawn Cemetery beside his wife.
