Conrad Ernst was born and lived in the village of Helmern in the Province of Westfalen, Prussia where he had a small farm and he was also a shoemaker to help support his family. He married Elisabeth Meier in 1830 and they had seven children. They immigrated from Bremen, Prussia to New Orleans, Louisiana arriving May 25, 1852 aboard the ship S.S. Naomi. They travelled up the Mississippi River to Iowa where he bought 160 acres of land in Richland Twp. Jackson County, Iowa to settle and raise their family. He lived on a farm near the St. Nicholas Church until his death only three years later.
The surname Earnest has a couple different variations due to misspelling during immigration and the 'Americanization' of names. The family surname today is commonly spelled Ernst.
