J. Ray Blankenship

Jessie Ray Blankenship, 73, of Lynchburg, VA, died Tuesday, September 13, 2011. He was the husband of Priscilla Hubbard Blankenship for 50 years.

Ray was born Tuesday, April 19, 1938 in Bedford County, VA, a son of the late John Otey Blankenship and Ruby Gray Blankenship.

In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by two brothers; Carl and John Blankenship, a sister; Phyllis Bruffy and her husband, Douglas, and a brother-in-law; Artis Thomas.

In addition to his wife, Ray is survived by a daughter; Vickie Morris and her husband Greg, of Rustburg, a son; Gary Blankenship, of Lynchburg, two grandchildren; Tyler and Will Morris, of Rustburg, two brothers; Frank Blankenship and his wife, Faye, of Goode and Donald Blankenship and his wife, Barbara of Richmond, a sister; Rebecca Staples and her husband, Wayne, of Lynchburg, and three sister in-laws; Frances Blankenship, of Madison Heights, VA, Catherine Blankenship, of Evington, and Mary Frances Thomas, of Roanoke.

He was a member of Sandusky Baptist Church, Kazim Shrine Temple, of Roanoke, Forest Masonic Lodge #245 A.F. & A.M., for 44 years and a former member of the Scottish Rite, and Shriners Clown Unit.

Ray was in the automotive parts business for 47 years, working for Lynchburg Battery & Ignition Co., for 24 years, he was President and Manager for 15 stores. In 1982 he opened his own business, Lynchburg Auto Parts, where he was owner and President, until he retired due to illness in 2005.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Morgan's Baptist Church Cemetery, Moneta, VA.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Shriners Children's Hospital, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC, 29605; or Campbell County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 4123, Lynchburg, VA, 24502.
