Chicago Tribune April 18, 1939:

BELLE SQUIRE, 69, NOTED SUFFRAGE LEADER, IS DEAD

Music Teacher Led Tax Revolt for Vote.
Miss Belle Squire, music teacher, lecturer, and a leader in the woman's suffrage movement twenty-five years ago, died yesterday at 1614 Wallen avenue. She was 69 years old.
Miss Squire was born in Lima, O., and came to Chicago in 1909. In the next decade she taught, wrote for music publications, and established herself as an outstanding suffraget. During these years she also wrote articles on women's rights for THE SUNDAY TRIBUNE, Harper's Bazaar, Woman's World, and other publications.

Formed No Vote No Tax Body.
In 1910 Miss Squire's mother, Sarah, received a notice of tax delinquency growing out of an assessment on property at 3303 Evanston avenue. [Now Broadway.] Promptly Miss Squire, who attended to her mother's business matters, wrote a caustic letter of protest to Harry Lewis, Cook county attorney.
She protested that because neither she nor her mother were allowed to vote she would disregard the order to pay. The refusal, she wrote, was based on the principal that "taxation without representation was unjust."
An outgrowth of this protest was the formation by Miss Squire and other suffragets of the No Vote No Tax league.

Got Vote and Paid Regularly.
After women obtained the right to vote the league was disbanded and Miss Squire paid her taxes regularly.
In 1924 she went to France and lived there for ten years. While abroad she continued to write historical articles on the suffrage movement. Five years ago she returned to Chicago.
Miss Squire is survived by four brothers, Frank, with whom she lived; Fred, Walter, and Willis. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the chapel at 4245 Madison street. Burial will be in Forest Home cemetery.

Additional notes:

“What Women Want in Men” is the earliest article I have noticed at this time with a connection to Belle Squire. The article, taken from May issue of The Delineator magazine, appeared in Saint Mary’s Beacon (Leonard Town, MD) April 18, 1907.

She was co-founder (with Ida Bell Wells-Barnett) of one of the most important black female suffrage organizations in the state and the city, the Alpha Suffrage Club in January 1913.
