In the summer of 1948, Bill's 2 grandchildren, children of his youngest child Bob, would come to live with them. They raised the children, with son Bob's help, until December 1956, when they were returned to their mother & step-father in Texas. In addition to their farm, Bill & Belma owned a small grocery & dry goods store in Slocomb, Alabama. After the grandchildren left, Bill & Belma moved to Channelview, Texas, a small community near Houston. They managed a small grocery store until their retirement in the early 1970s. After their retirement, they were able to travel all over the US, visiting family members & friends. Bill died of heart disease in 1976, at the age of 81.
