Dad wasn't famous, he was known only in this small town. But to us, he was the most important man in the world.

For Dad, his family was everything. It was why he got up in the mornings, it was why he worked hard every day, it was why every night he would play ball, go to school events, listen to homework, and even do dishes, or make breakfast. Education was important to Dad, a member of the HeadStart Program, and a little League Coach.

Dad taught us what was right, and to stand up for what was right. He protected us like a lion. He provided for us, even when times were hard, we never went without what we needed. He worried over us, listened to our troubles, and would slip us $5 if we needed it without us ever asking. Whenever we would live away in another town or state, we would call once a week, and if we didn't you could expect him to be pulling up in the driveway, checking to make sure everything was ok. No matter how far away we were, he would be there.

He always had that pipe in his mouth, and the sweet smell of Prince Albert always brings dad back as clear as if he were right there. Which, I believe he is. The Cardinals was his favorite baseball team, and I feel him by me, with every game I watch.

Dad was a school crossing guard after his retirement, which is a job he really enjoyed. One day a young woman didn't see him in the road stopping traffic so the children could cross, and she hit Dad with her car.

Dad passed away from a series of strokes 6 months later.

I'm Free

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free I'm following the path God has laid you see. I took His hand when I heard him call I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day To laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way I found that peace at the close of day.

If my parting has left a void Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss Oh yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full, I savored much Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your hearts and peace to thee God wanted me now; He set me free.
