James Shelton McKay was born in Pikeville, Alabama and was the son of Joseph Morris McKay and Victoria Hughes McKay. He married Doris Eugenia West, the daughter of Rev. John Pierce West, Sr. and Ella Doris Maxwell West and loved her faithfully until the day he died. They lived in a simple home in Guin, Alabama with a large garden. Relatives loved coming to visit, enjoying their pot-bellied stove, eating fresh vegetables prepared with care, and playing with the beagles that lived under the shed.

During World War II, he was a sergeant in the US Army. He was a lifelong member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church, where he and Doris are buried. He was licensed as a local pastor and served small United Methodist Churches on occasion.

Jim was survived by two daughters, Anne McKay Odom of Tuscaloosa and Jane McKay Spooner of Guin. He was also survived by two Sons, James S. McKay Jr. of Culowhee, NC and David E. McKay of Jacksonville, FL. He left 7 grandchildren, Merry Spooner Kuchle, April Odom Hargraves, Dallas McKay, James Odom, Miranda McKay, Patric Spooner and Victoria Spooner.

His relatives remember him as a solid, simple, steady, and compassionate person who loved Christ and his church.
