Sarah M. Lowe was born near Moscow, New York, April 18, 1811. In 1863 she was married to Cornelius C. Lowe, and five years later they moved from New York to Rockford, Illinois, where they located on a farm. Mr. and Mrs. Lowe came west in 1872 settling in Grundy County near Parkersburg, where they underwent the hardships of the early pioneer days. At that time there were no main roads and they had to travel across the prairie to the town, while the trip to the mill required from two to three days. In 1901 Mrs. Lowe moved to Clay County, Iowa where she lived until her death.
To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Lowe two children were born, Charles Lowe and Effa B. Lowe. Her husband passed away in 1898 and in 1923 her son Charles died. The daughter was called in death three months later, thus leaving Mrs. Lowe heartbroken and health impaired.
