Sophia J. Sokol, age 87, wife of the late Emil Sokol, a longtime Little Falls resident, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica, with her loving family by her side.
She was born in Herkimer on Sept. 19, 1923, the daughter of the late John and Mary (Dombroska) Popka. Sophia was educated in Herkimer schools and was a class of 1941 graduate. She married Emil Sokol on Oct. 11, 1941, and had 67 loving years of marriage. Mr. Sokol passed away on Nov. 17, 2008. She assisted in the operation of the family farm on Snells Bush Road for 30 years and at one time had worked for Daniel Green Company and Herkimer County BOCES.
Mrs. Sokol was a volunteer for the American Red Cross since 1977, serving as Little Falls blood drive day chair for the past 20 years. In 2008, Sophia was the recipient of the American Red Cross Great Heroes Award.
Sophia gave countless hours to the Little Falls Hospital, volunteering in the coffee shop, administrative office and the financial office. She was a member of the Little Falls Hospital Guild, chairing the holiday bazaar for 13 years. She served as guild vice president and was a longtime member of the Little Falls AARP chapter, serving as legislative chairperson.
Mrs. Sokol served as a monthly telephone caller for the Herkimer Christian Women's Club, and had volunteered at the Little Falls Community Co-Op since 1975. In 2009, Sophia received the Women's Christian Association Volunteer Award and had given over 7,000 volunteer hours with the Catholic Charities of Herkimer County Retired Senior Volunteer Program. She also had served as town of Manheim election inspector for more than 30 years.
One of her great enjoyments was tending to her flowers and her garden. She never came into contact with a flower that she did not "Love."
She is survived by two daughters, Emily and Patricia Sokol, of Little Falls; a son, Emil Sokol, Jr., and wife, Donna, of Longmont, Colo.; a grandson, Jeffrey Sokol, of Syracuse; sisters, Rose Sokol, of Thatcher, Ariz., and Helen Witkowski, of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a brother, John Popka and wife, Patricia, of Herkimer; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Sophia was predeceased by a sister, Anna Woytowich, in April 2011.
Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe St., Little Falls, with Pastor Gertrude Ortlieb, officiating. Procession will follow to Rural Park Cemetery, Ingham Mills, where she will be laid to rest.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The family is being cared for by Harry J. Enea, funeral director.
Contributions in her memory can be made to Little Falls Food Pantry or the American Red Cross. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
