Jack was born Nov. 19, 1929, in Wichita Falls, Texas to the late I.D. Newton, Sr. and Lorene Lena Newton, and had lived in the Joplin area most of his life.
Jack obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Pittsburg State University and his Master's degree in Education from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.
He taught music at several schools in Kansas and Missouri. He served as band director at Carthage Junior High School for several years before his retirement. He then worked as a sales associate at J.C. Penney in the Northpark Mall for several years.
Jack was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was a generous supporter of The Society of St. Vincent DePaul. He volunteered at St. John's Regional Medical Center and the Meals on Wheels program. He was an active supporter of the Klassic Society of Missouri Southern State University.
Jack was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the 7th Division Band and was awarded the Bronze Star.
Survivors include his brother, Jim Newton and his wife, Margie, Joplin; a sister, Norma McBee, Joplin; and 16 nieces and nephews.
Services will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. Rev. Justin Monaghan will officiate. Interment will follow at Carl Junction Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Timothy Newton, Nicholas Newton, Michael Wardlow, Danny Riekofski, Mike Parrot and Ron Repplinger, Jr. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Parker Mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Society of St. Vincent DePaul, in care of Parker Mortuary.
