She was born in Proctor, NC on August 16, 1912, to Luther and Catherine Bryant, joining a loving family of five brothers and four sisters. Along with her mother and four sisters, she traveled by train to Okanogan, WA in 1921, to be with her father, who had come here to work. Eva got her early education and later graduated from Okanogan High School. In 1933, she married Doss Payne, Sr. They raised their family in Okanogan until 1944, when they moved to Orondo, where Eva and Doss managed the Leonard Schons Orchards for many years. After a fire destroyed their home in 1952, they continued working in Orondo for a while and then moved to Waterville in 1954. Eva worked for several private homes, cleaning and baby-sitting children while working as a cleaning lady and doing laundry for the Douglas County Memorial Hospital until moving to Wenatchee, where she worked several years as a cleaning lady and in laundry at the former St. Anthony's Rosewood Hospital and Central Washington Hospital. She was a member of the Waterville Rebecca Lodge for over 50 years.
