Sioux City Journal - August 16, 2001

NORTH SIOUX CITY - Harland Orley Nelson, 90, of North Sioux City died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Christy-Smith Berkemier Chapel, with the Rev. Merrill Muller officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Nelson was born April 28, 1911, in Norfolk, Neb., the son of Orley and Maude (Parks) Nelson. He was raised in Norfolk and graduated from Norfolk High School. He moved to Sioux City in the late 1930s.

He married Georgie Sanders in May 1930. He later married Clarice Carrico in October 1938. She died in October 1971. He then married Caroline Conti Medders on Feb. 28, 1976, in Elk Point, S.D.

He was an owner and operator truck driver. He drove for Frank Pilley Corp., then managed the tobacco department at Tollar Drug Store. He then owned and operated Jack's Bar and later the Park Inn in Riverside. He was then employed with the South Dakota State Racing Commission. He also owned race horses.

He enjoyed sports.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Jerry and Kay Nelson of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Bob and Helen Nelson of Sioux City; two daughters, Harla Gosch of Sioux City, and Cathy and her husband, Roger Greiner, of Spencer, Iowa; a stepson and his wife, John and Mandy Bulleri of San Antonio, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Joel, Susan, Deborah and Jeff Nelson, Robert and Susan Ellison, Tracy and Michelle Helmhold, Trent Gosch, Dori Ebaugh and Kevin Greiner; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

He also was preceded in death by a brother, Blair Nelson.
