Joseph was killed in a mining accident when a cable attached to a trip of cars which were being lowered in the No 5 slope of the Franklin colliery, Lehigh Valley Company, gave way. The cars went racing down the slope killing him instantly. Two other miners were fatally injured, and three others were injured but survived. He was survived by a wife and 8 children. He was 43 years old.
