A family care physician and a resident of Bunkie for 35 years, Carl Frederick Jory passed away in Baton Rouge, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, July 15, 2006, at the age of 63.
Visitation at the First Baptist Church in Bunkie on Monday, July 17, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral service at the church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 18. Burial in Bayou Rouge Baptist Cemetery, Evergreen, under the direction of Melancon Funeral Home of Bunkie.
Dr. Jory is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Dottie Hernandez Jory, and their three children, Suzannah Jory Townsend, married to Byron Townsend of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., Caroline Jory Nelson of O'Fallon, Ill., and Peter Carl Jory, married to Gina Theriot Jory of Baton Rouge; two granddaughters, Savannah Grace Jory and Alexandra Kendall Nelson; and a grandson, Luke Noble Jory.
He was a native of Eunice, the son of Glenn Jory and the late Mora Johnston Jory. He was the brother of Donald R. Jory of Jennings and Susie Jory LaHaye of Thibodaux.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene Jory; and sister, Glenora Jory Jordan.
He was a graduate of Eunice High School. He received his bachelor of science degree from LSU in Baton Rouge and his medical degree from LSU School of Medicine-New Orleans. He completed an internship and a general surgery residency with the U.S. Public Health Service in New Orleans and was the chief medical officer at the federal building in Mobile, Ala., before opening his family practice in Bunkie in 1971. Since that time, he had been a member of the medical staff of Bunkie General Hospital and chief of staff in 1974, 1975, 1982, 1991 and 1996-2006; emergency department medical director from 1996-2006; and cardiac rehabilitation medical director from 2005-2006. He had been a member of the Board of Commissioners of Bunkie General Hospital since 1979 and chairman of the board from 1986-1991. He was a board-certified family physician and a fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was a member of the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians, the Avoyelles Parish Medical Society and past president of the Louisiana State Medical Society and the LSU Alumni Association of Avoyelles Parish.
Dr. Jory was a beloved and dedicated physician to his community in Bunkie and Avoyelles Parish. His physicians in the Baton Rouge community responded to him in that same caring and compassionate way with their overwhelming gestures of kindness and support during his battle with cancer.
