Musician. Born in London, England, he was not only one of the finest jazz drummers and bandleaders, but a very capable pianist and vibraphonist. His working associations as a drummer included playing with American stars, including Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett and Coleman Hawkins. He also worked with Ronnie Scott in the 1950s and became the house drummer at Scott's club in the 1960s, where he accompanied Miles Davis, Ben Webster and Jimmy Witherspoon. Crombie continued to lead his own bands throughout the 1970s and was part of pianist Alan Clare's trio at various times throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He is regarded as an important contributors to the evolution of British jazz.
