FLORA KATE HESTER STEELE FAMILY
Flora and William and their family also had may exciting adventures. The most important adventure was the family's survival of the great hurricane of Galveston in September 1900. Flora, William and the three children had taken the train to Galveston to enjoy a final vacation on the beach. As the day progressed, William became concerned about the weather and loaded his family up early to go back to the train station. By the time they got to the Galveston Train Station, the wind and waves were so high that the railroad was blocked. The Steele's had to remain in the railroad station for three days. They hung to the rafters in the roof as the water rose, animals, buildings, and people floated below. When the wind and water went down, so the men could get down, they were able to get fresh drinking water out of the the boilers on the steam engines. Imagine sitting on rafters and hanging on to your children for three days. They all survived and returned to their home in Alvin.
