CHAPEL HILL - Alice Berg Morton, 94, died December 23, 2003, at home in Chapel Hill, N.C. Previously, Mrs. Morton was a 45-year resident of Athens, Ga. Mrs. Morton was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, John D. Morton, on April 28, 2000.

Mrs. Morton was a 1931 graduate of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., and taught school in Callendar, Iowa, before her marriage.

Her life was devoted to Christian and volunteer service. Mrs. Morton and her husband were charter members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens, where Mrs. Morton served as church organist for 40 years. She also served as children's choir director, member of the adult choir, Sunday School teacher, and member of the Altar Guild. She was a Red Cross volunteer, amassing 7,000 hours of volunteer service. She was pianist for the Athens-Area Kiwanis Club and was its first female member. Mrs. Morton and her husband were co-recipients of the Inspiration Award from the Athens Community Council on Aging in 1988. She also was active in the Girl Scouts, serving as troop leader and district music coordinator for many years.

Mrs. Morton was the daughter of Christian A. and Emma Paulson Berg of Porter, Minn. She was born on the prairie in Yellow Medicine County, Minn. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Barbara and John Swanson of Bluffton S.C.; Mary and Robert Wallace of Albany, Ga.; Jean Elia and Carol Morton of Chapel Hill, N.C.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 28, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Athens, Ga., with interment at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 27, 2003, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bridges Funeral Home, Athens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 2535 Jefferson Road, Athens, GA 30607, or the Salvation Army - Bridges Funeral Home.
