Etta was the daughter of Thomas Milton Springfield and Delilah Wilson/Springfield. She had one brother and four sisters. One sister, Martha died as a young child. She was apparently buried with her mother Delilah in Perry County, Arkansas. Etta and her three sisters were very close all their life.

Etta first married Andrew Campbell Smith on 12/22/1886 in Hamilton County, Tennessee. Together they had seven sons. A daughter, with spina bifida died at birth. Campbell died on 8/14/1913, leaving her with several boys to raise. He was greatly afflicted with arthritis, to the point that he walked with a cane and a crutch. Her youngest son, Charlie was just four years old at the time of his father's death.

She later married Frank Lamar Bridgeman - they married 2/1/1920 in Hamilton County, Tennessee. He was a laborer at a brick company. He died 9/25/1930 of myocarditis & heart disease. He had been previous married to Emma Kelly and had four known children. He & Etta had no children together. He is buried at College Hill Cemetery, Dayton, Rhea County, Tennessee.

She then married John Wesley Hilliard about 1951. He was a really good person and was well liked. They were a very happy couple. Eventually they both got so old that they could no longer take care of each other.

Etta's oldest son, William Luther Smith, came and took her to Atlanta to live with him and his wife. John's son, Ira Casper Hilliard, took his father to live in Davenport, Iowa with his family. John died there in Davenport, but is buried in Hamilton County, Tennessee.

Etta was 90 years old when she died and is buried beside her son's father, Andrew Campbell Smith.

Etta was a strong, determined person. She truly loved her sons. Two of them, Warren Randolph Smith (aged 49) and Ewing W. Smith (aged 37), were killed by other people and McKinley Campbell Smith (aged 39), died of blood poisoning. She outlived three husbands and the three sons. She is buried beside her first husband, Andrew Campbell Smith, the father of her children.

Etta was my Great Grandmother. We called her Tennessee Grandma. I was 16 when she died. I truly miss her.
